Larkware's The Daily Grind is a must read
I sure everyone has their must read blogs. The Daily Grind is that for me. While I have about 155 feeds I subscribe to with RssPopper, The Daily Grind is usually the first one I read every day. He has between 5 and 10 items of interest (software releases and other information) that are very applicable .NET developers.

Don't try to have Microsoft Money and Visual Studio 2005 open at the same time.
Just an FYI, but don’t try to have Microsoft Money 2005 / 2006 open at the same time as Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. It may work for a few minutes but I have found that eventually Visual Studio will crash.

VSTS Unit Tests: will debug but not run?
We have found a weird situation where for a certain vs.net solution, you can debug a vsts unit test but cannot run them. When you try to run them you get this error: (for all tests)

VMware 5.5 RC not so hot
The one big feature about VMware 5.5 over VMware 5.0 was the ability to import and use Virtual PC images. But all I get is an error code every time I try to do it with the Virtual PC image I have.

VistaDB to support .NET 2.0 features in version 3.0 (sometime in 2006...)
I am not sure on a firm timeline but VistaDB has said that they are going to support .NET 2.0 features in the 3.0 release of VistaDB Server. The only date that they have on their website is 2006.

RIP, Google Toolbar...
I have been trying out the MSN Toolbar for a little while, at first just to get the tabbed browser. However, I do like the results I get back from Google better then MSN. I then found that you can change the settings in MSN Toolbar to actually search Google instead of MSN. Nice!

Continuous Integration for Visual Studio 2005 Team System beta 2
Dion Olsthoorn has been kind enough to post his experiences (and code) with trying to get VSTS support Continuous Integration.
This is one of the things I think is really missing from VSTS and it would be very nice if it was integrated into the final release… -
Taking a Resharper break
If you don’t know what that phrase means, you might not know what Resharper is. Resharper is a tool by JetBrains that gave you refactoring support in VS.NET 2003. The phrase “taking a resharper break” comes from the fact that when you go to open a VS.NET solution file (especially one with several projects) it can take several minutes, even on a fast machine with 2 GB of RAM. I think I was one of only a few people on my previous team that did not uninstall it. Don’t get me wrong, I DO think it is very slow. But I loved the refactoring tools that it gave me too much to give it up.

Reading blogs in Outlook
I was a big fan of NewsGator back when it first came out and I could read all my blogs in Outlook and organise them into .PST files and have search applications like X1 or Yahoo Desktop Search (built on X1 engine) could index my pst files and I could find them very easily. I could also forward a posting by just hitting reply.

Converting from array of <T> to List<T>
It seems like there would be an easy way to convert from an array of objects of type T to a generic list of type T. Now maybe I am just missing it completely, but a method like List<T>.AddRange( T[] ) would make sense.

Import mail into Thunderbird (or why a majority of people use Microsoft products)
I have been trying out Thunderbird for my mail client and I like it because I can run rules on my IMAP mail accounts very easily. However, I am upgrading to a new pc and I am trying to figure out how to move my accounts, mail, rules, etc to my new machine. You can easily import stuff from other email programs but not from Thunderbird. Ahhrrr!

Great C# User Group Mtg with CLR Team!
It was a great meeting with Microsoft opening up 3 rooms for all the people last night. They covered a lot of material in the amount of time allotted! Kirk Allen and Jerry Dennany list some of the stuff covered, but if you missed it, you really missed a great meeting. Brendon Schwartz and Matt Ranlett (Atlanta .NET Regular Guys) have posted something as well. Man, these guys goes to almost every user group meeting in Atlanta and shares lots of information on their blog. (thanks guys!)

The future of loading Assemblies into an AppDomain
As you may or may not know, the method AppDomain.AppendPrivatePath has been marked as obsolete in the 2.0 framework. The message is this: "AppDomain.AppendPrivatePath has been deprecated. Please investigate the use of AppDomainSetup.PrivateBinPath instead.". This is the method used my most applications the use a module or plugin style framework to load their assemblies. The problem now is that it’s replacement of sorts is to use AppDomainSetup. AppDomainSetup can only be used when setting up an AppDomain and before any assemblies are loaded. Thus if you need to dynamically load assemblies from an a directory other then the one containing the executable, you are in trouble.

Atlanta C# User Group
Well, I went to my first Atlanta C# User Group meeting last night. It was very interesting. Keith Rome did a presentation on Asynchronous Programming. You can download the presentation here.
