VS 2008 Web Development Hot-Fix Roll-Up Available

One of the things we are trying to do with VS 2008 is to more frequently release public patches that roll-up bug-fixes of commonly reported problems. Today we are shipping a hot-fix roll-up that addresses several issues that we've seen reported with VS 2008 and Visual Web Developer Express 2008 web scenarios.

Hot Fix Details

You can download this hot-fix roll-up for free here (it is a 2.6MB download). Below is a list of the issues it fixes:

HTML Source view performance

• Source editor freezes for a few seconds when typing in a page with a custom control that has more than two levels of sub-properties.
• “View Code” right-click context menu command takes a long time to appear with web application projects.
• Visual Studio has very slow behavior when opening large HTML documents.
• Visual Studio has responsiveness issues when working with big HTML files with certain markup.
• The Tab/Shift-Tab (Indent/Un-indent) operation is slow with large HTML selections.

Design view performance

• Slow typing in design view with certain page markup configurations.

HTML editing

• Quotes are not inserted after Class or CssClass attribute even when the option is enabled.
• Visual Studio crashes when ServiceReference element points back to the current web page.

JavaScript editing

• When opening a JavaScript file, colorization of the client script is sometimes delayed several seconds.
• JavaScript IntelliSense does not work if an empty string property is encountered before the current line of editing.
• JavaScript IntelliSense does not work when jQuery is used.

Web Site build performance

• Build is very slow when Bin folder contains large number of assemblies and .refresh files with web-site projects.

Installation Notes

For more information on how to download and install the above patch, please read this blog post here. In particular, if you are using Windows Vista with UAC enabled, make sure to extract the patch to a directory other than "c:\" (otherwise you'll see an access denied error).

To verify that this hot-fix patch successfully installed, launch VS 2008 and select the Help->About menu item. Make sure that there is an entry that says ‘Hotfix for Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite – ENU (KB946581)’.

If you ever want to remove the patch, go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and select “Hotfix for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 – KB946581” under Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (or Visual Web Developer Express 2008) and click “Remove".

Summary

Obviously it goes without saying that we would have liked to have shipped without any bugs. Hopefully this hot-fix enables you to quickly solve them if you are encountering them. Thank you to those who helped us identify the causes of these issues, as well as to the group of customers who have helped us verify the above fixes the last few weeks.

Note: If you do encounter issues with VS 2008 features for web development in the future, I recommend always asking for help in the VS 2008 Forum on www.asp.net. The VS Web Tools team actively monitors this forum and can provide help.

Hope this helps,

Scott

• Hi, Scott!
It provides lots of performance enhancements. Well done!
Regards, Eduardo Costa.

• Bravo; works like a charm. Able to say farewell to VS2005 for good now (and hello to that 4GB of HD space I just freed up ).

I applaud a update/patch/release cycle shorter than SP1 for VS2005 was despite the complexity this may introduce into the mix.

• Hi Scott,

Any plan to make this available on Windows Update?

Cheers,
Bartek

• great release... definitly hope that you guys keep the hotfixes coming as they are found ... i always thought the long delays between general VS updates waiting for SP1 was insane in 2k5... hotfixes are nice... but I agree what would be nicer is if we could get these rolled out via windows update :)

• It is helpful, thank.

• Thanks or this. Would be very helpful

• I'm glad you guys decided to use a hot-fix and not wait for the SP. In fact I would prefer if you guys just had a webpage somewhere with links to all the hot-fixes; no need for service packs, or even windows update. I vote for smaller and more frequent fixes rather than larger packages and more time between them.

• Excellent - I love the more frequent bug fix ideas. Any plans to improve (or simply add) support for other Javascript frameworks?

• Hi Bartek,

>>>>>> Any plan to make this available on Windows Update?

These issues are only with Visual Studio and not with the .NET Framework runtime. We only release Windows (including the .NET FX since that ships in Windows) on Windows Update - so this patch won't appear there. Instead you'll want to download it directly using the link I provided above.

Hope this helps,

Scott

• Hi Ben,

>>>>>>> Scott, when you release the SL 2.0 Beta, is that when we will get VS2008 SP1? Another words, can I juest wait for SL 2.0ß to have everything installed (Bug fixes, new additions to IDE for SL2.0, ASP.Net 3.5 Extention and etc.) by that installations?

With the Silverlight 2 beta we'll release a VS tools add-in that enables you to target SL apps. That won't be VS 2008 SP1 though - instead it will be a VS add-in.

Hope this helps,

Scott

• Hi Kevin,

>>>>>> Any plans to improve (or simply add) support for other Javascript frameworks?

This hotfix actually makes working with JQuery much better. Jeff has more details on this JQuery support here: http://blogs.msdn.com/webdevtools/archive/2008/02/08/jscript-intellisense-working-with-jquery.aspx

Hope this helps,

Scott

• Very much appreciated, Scott. We love the idea of more frequent patches. Thanks!

• Frequent updates? Awesome. I'm a huge fan. I wouldn't be opposed to quarterly VS hotfix patches, makes life just that much easier in small bites.

• Great work guys. I especially appreciate how you and the webdevtools team actively pursued those who publically posted issues (like I did on my blog). Thanks for including me in the test loop.

• Well done Scott, the performance has incredible increase. Just keep going to make us satisfy

• Geez Scott, that link you gave us makes us sign up for some Connections program, can't I just get the damn update! Is signing up for Connections really necessary when I have an MSDN sub?

• Scott,

We're about to rollout our first ASP.Net app that refers to assemblies using .Net 3.5.
What is to be considered/installed when rolling out .Net 3.5 on a Win2k2003R2 server.
Thanks

• Hi,Scott

How to work in the Chinese version?

• Scott,

When are we going to see other items resolved? Like the fact that opening MSTest TestView for 600+ tests for the first time can result in a wait of 5-10 minutes (on a Core 2 Duo Extreme no less). VS2005 opens the same test view in a matter of 1-2 seconds.

• Not sure if it is a bug, but try opening a large site via ftp with VS2008...It takes forever and usually just locks up. I know we should work with a local copy, but why have ftp as an option if it doesn't work well.

Also, is there a way to turn off the "Upgrade this site to .NET 3.5" box for all projects? I can't seem to find the setting (supposing there is one).

BTW, VS2008 ROCKS!!

• Scott,

The performance boost is amazing. I can really notice a difference in the load times. Your team appears to have done a great job with this hotfix. Please keep the frequent updates coming.

Bill

• Scott,

You are correct that only Windows components are included in Windows Update, but not Microsoft Update, which is another version of WU that includes other Microsoft applications like SQL Server and Office. It would be nice to see this patch included on Microsoft Update.

• Thanks Scott.
Anything on the horizon in regards to VS2008 providing better synchronization with remote sites? i.e. Sync folders Local to Remote, Remote to Local, create a list of pending updates then click to begin.

• Hi Dan,

>>>>>> Geez Scott, that link you gave us makes us sign up for some Connections program, can't I just get the damn update! Is signing up for Connections really necessary when I have an MSDN sub?

Unfortunately the connections site requires you to login using a LiveID or PassportID (same as hotmail, IM and the other Microsoft sites). Registering is free if you don't have one of these already. Sorry for the hassle in having to sign-in - I've complained to them about this in the past, but it hasn't been removed just yet.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hi Yvan,

>>>>>>> We're about to rollout our first ASP.Net app that refers to assemblies using .Net 3.5. What is to be considered/installed when rolling out .Net 3.5 on a Win2k2003R2 server.

All you need to-do is install .NET 3.5 and IIS on the server and you should be good to go. There are no patches you need to install. The above patch is only for design-time VS scenarios.

Hope this helps,

Scott

• Hi Elden,

>>>>>> How to work in the Chinese version?

I believe the patch is language neutral and should work in both the english and localized versions of VS.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hi John,

>>>>>>> When are we going to see other items resolved? Like the fact that opening MSTest TestView for 600+ tests for the first time can result in a wait of 5-10 minutes (on a Core 2 Duo Extreme no less). VS2005 opens the same test view in a matter of 1-2 seconds.

I haven't heard of that issue before myself (my team doesn't build that functionality which is probably why). I just sent email to the team that works on it to see what their plans are.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hi Toebens,

>>>>> Do you know if the "mouse scroll whole page at a time" bug is also fixed with this patch?

That is not improved with this patch. That issue turns out not to be a VS issue, but rather a bug with Windows (I believe when running 32-bit applications in WOW mode on 64-bit machines). Windows sends invalid windows messages to the UI message pump in those situations, which is causing the app to crash (not just VS - other apps can run into this as well). I believe Windows is planning on releasing a Windows patch to fix this.

Hope this helps,

Scott

• Hi Mark,

>>>>>> Anything on the horizon in regards to VS2008 providing better synchronization with remote sites? i.e. Sync folders Local to Remote, Remote to Local, create a list of pending updates then click to begin.

That is something we are looking at with the VS IDE (and doing better hosting support in general). I'm not sure yet when it will ship though.

We are also doing a lot of work to make remote deployment and management of applications easier in general. The MS Web Deployment Tool we shipped a CTP of a few weeks back is definitely work looking at for this - since it can significatly help with the management of application roll-outs. You'd use VS to build and copy the application locally, and then use the MS Web Deploy tool to roll it out on any number of machines remotely (it supports diffing, auto sync and web-farm management).

More details on the MS Web Deploy Tool can be found here: http://blogs.iis.net/msdeploy/archive/2008/01/22/welcome-to-the-web-deployment-team-blog.aspx

Hope this helps,

Scott

• This will make my live less stressy :)
Great improvements for some issues I've been fighting with.

• Please get it on Microsoft Update!

• Sorry, when I said "other" I meant "other than JQuery". e.g. YUI (which works somewhat, but incompletely), and Prototype (which didn't work at all last time I tried it).

• Still no VBscript or .Net v1.x support, though. :<

So on Vista, I still also have to run Virtual PC + XP + VS2003 to support them.

"Do more with less" (where "less" = painful workarounds).

• Yipppeeee. Say goodbye to NotePad ++; cause thats what I've been forced to use since upgrading one of my machines to VS2008

Now if M$ would only bring back NTBACKUP for Vista I'd have nothing to complain about. (well at least on my short list)

• Hi Kevin,

>>>>>>> Sorry, when I said "other" I meant "other than JQuery". e.g. YUI (which works somewhat, but incompletely), and Prototype (which didn't work at all last time I tried it).

We are working on enabling more popular libraries as well. Prototype and YUI are both on the list to enable better going forward.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hi Rob,

>>>>>>> Still no VBscript or .Net v1.x support, though. :<

We are going to enable VBScript intellisense support with the next roll-up patch/SP. We have this working now - just need to finish testing it.

Thanks,

Scott

• Kudos to Microsoft! The fix is right on time - next week I was going to downconvert our 50+ boxes back to VS2005 because of HTML editor issues... But now we'll stay with VS2008 and we finally can start using LINQ!

Thank you!

• If intellisense for jQuery is fixed, this made my day!

• Whenever i save my web/app config files using VS2008 is auto closes them? Is this a bug? As far as i can tell i cannot see any options that would enabale/disable it?

• "None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup."

I try to install in the Chinese version.

• Thanks for sorting out the jQuery issue - that makes our lives considerably easier :-)

• Add me to the list of folks that thinks it's ridiculous the amount of signing in and agreeing and signing up and verifying and joining connections, etc to get the patch. JEEZ! ...not that I'm ungrateful for the patch. It's great, but please let whomever handles the process for getting the patch, that it's more than a bit unwieldy.

• I don't think the patch is language neutral because executing the extracted file "VS90-KB946581.exe" on a german Vista PC (UAC disabled, extracted successfully to a folder with full access, logged in as an Admin) with German VS 2008 results in the message:

[German]
Auf dem Computer ist keines der von diesem Softwareupdate betroffenen Produkte installiert. Klicken Sie auf "Abbrechen", um Setup zu beenden.

which means something like: None of the affected products is installed on this computer. Click "Cancel" to exit setup.

Regards, Stefan Falz

• Scott, any word on storing the compilation configuration settings in a separate file?

• This update is a great way for MS to improve developer relations, especially compared to open source projects.

So many people say open source is great because it's free and not owned/controlled by a company. Who cares? To me getting faster updates is more important among other things.

In a dream world I'd like MS to:
- Make Ordering MSDN Electronic Subscription only SHOULD NOT TAKE 3 days. Why oh why?
- Provide direct answers about product plans. For example, when will there be a managed version of DX10? No one will answer.
- What's the status of the next Entity Framework beta? (it's ok to say "we haven't figured out the final feature set yet", or simply "we don't know yet").

There has been great progress in certain areas, Scott your blog is one great example that has been huge for dev relations. The interim updates are another example. Just don't forget there is more low hanging fruit that would build loyalty with little cost.

• I installed the patch and I think there has been some general improvement. But there are still times when I will open an .aspx file (and not a large one at all, I'm talking 40 lines), go to a line, delete a character in a string, and have to wait FIVE SECONDS on my dual processer Dell Precision 670 for a response.

• Trying to remove the hotfix, Hotfix for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 – KB946581 not showing up in Add/Remove programs. My controls on a nested masterpage are not compiling, getting error(Handles clause requires a WithEvents variable defined in the containing type or one of its base types)on the linkbuttons.

I just sent email to the team to try to understand whether the patch is language neutral or not. If it isn't, we'll make sure to get language specific patches up soon.

Thanks,

Can you send me an email (scottgu@microsoft.com) with more details and I'll loop someone on the team to investigate? Can you as part of that email also bring up the VS 2008 about box and use the "Copy Info" button to paste your current VS configuration in the email? That will help us identify whether you have the patch installed correctly, and/or what your VS configuration looks like (and if you have any 3rd party VS plug-ins installed that might cause problems).

Thanks,

Scott

Can you send me an email about this (scottgu@microsoft.com)? I'd like to understand the issues you are seeing better.

To uninstall the patch, click on VS 2008 in add/remove programs and then select the "View Installed Updates" link on the left (if you are using Vista). This will list all the VS 2008 patches and let you uninstall any of them.

Thanks,

Scott

• This is cool, thanks.
I wonder will VS get a more useful theme selector with some predefined themes. Using the export/import setting wizard is not fun.

• When verifying through the About dialog, my entry doesn't say "Hotfix for Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite – ENU (KB946581)".

It says "Hotfix for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition – ENU (KB946581)". I guess that's because I'm not running Team System.

• Hi David,

>>>>> When verifying through the About dialog, my entry doesn't say "Hotfix for Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Suite – ENU (KB946581)". It says "Hotfix for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition – ENU (KB946581)". I guess that's because I'm not running Team System.

Yes - the opening blurb will depend on which VS edition you have installed. As long as it has the KB number correct you should be good to go.

Thanks,

Scott

• "So many people say open source is great because it's free and not owned/controlled by a company. Who cares?:

You all should care .... Look what Microsoft did to the Visual Basic and Visual FoxPro Communities ...
Talk about taking one in the rear ... Don't think for a minute MSFT wouldn't do it again, this is about monopolies, stockholder returns and corporate greed NOT software development ... Visual Studio sucks far worse then Visual Basic, if there is a product that should be discontinued this one is it !!! Who wants to learn a framework with 100,000 pems just to build an application ... MSFT is blindly following a failing paradigm and needs to wake up ...

• Too bad the installer doesn't notice that VS is open and then just does "things" until the end of time.

Hopefully it'll install here and things will speed up. Thanks for the good work!

• Thanks Scott, much appreciated.

It doesn't look like this fixes the debug problem when using an external config file for the compilation element in the Web.config file - I hope this can be fixed soon as it's the only thing stopping us from upgrading all our existing projects to VS2008. (Even an option to disable the broken startup checks would be appreciated)

Thanks again,

• Hi Dawud,

>>>>> I installed the hotfix and now I cannot create new websites in VS2008, any fix for this?

Hmm - something must have gone wrong with the patch install. If you send me email (scottgu@microsoft.com) we'll get someone to fix it on your machine.

Thanks,

Scott

• this thing broke my install of vs.net... two class libraries cannot be opened because "QueryService" failed.

• Hi Scott,

I love that you guys released this roll-up.

Any chances on getting the following JS IntelliSense bug fixed? When I create an ASP.NET AJAX object in an external JS file, there is no IntelliSense available for that object within that file. Only when I link to that file through an explicit reference tag in another file or through ScriptManager on a page do I have IntelliSense on that object.

Code Snippet:

///
Type.registerNamespace("My.Namespace");

// no IntelliSense available for My.
My.Namespace.Object = new function() {

}

Thx, Joel

• Hi Scott,

Thanks for the hotfix. This hotfix reduced overall loading time of my project in VS, but still .aspx pages are taking a long time to load. Is there any setting i need to change. I have a couple of third party controls on the .aspx page, is it because of these controls the page is taking a long time to load.

Thanks
Vijay

• Hi Scott,
I have a very stupid question.
We have problems with our computer and privacy for a long time.
Today, after I reinstalled my Windows, I discovered in our User Accounts something new: Limited account, password protected (ASP.net Machine A...). Before it was only one our own Admin account.
Please, help. What does it mean?

• Hi Bigwes,

>>>>> this thing broke my install of vs.net... two class libraries cannot be opened because "QueryService" failed.

If you are still having problems please send me email (scottgu@microsoft.com) and we'll have someone get that fixed.

Thanks,

Scott

I just forwarded your mail to the team. We'll see if we can add support for that with SP1.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hi Ian,

>>>>> I am glad for the update, but is there an issue with SilverLight 1.1 C# debugging?

I haven't heard of an issue with that. Can you try setting the option and then close and restart the IDE? Maybe the setting wasn't persisted correct?

Thanks,

Scott

It could be that the third party controls are loading something significant on first start. Do you see speed issues once the page is up and running or is it just at load time? If you send me email (scottgu@microsoft.com) we can have someone follow up on the specific 3rd party controls.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hi Kiwi,

>>>>>>> I have a very stupid question. We have problems with our computer and privacy for a long time. Today, after I reinstalled my Windows, I discovered in our User Accounts something new: Limited account, password protected (ASP.net Machine A...). Before it was only one our own Admin account.

When ASP.NET is installed it creates a low-rights account to run the ASP.NET worker process under. This is a non-interactive account - which means no one can login the OS with it, nor use it remotely. It also has a randomly generated password (so can't be guessed). ASP.NET uses it so that even if your application is ever compromised, the code in the application runs as a guest on the machine and doesn't by default have any write access to disk or to sensitive areas of the computer.

Hope this helps,

Scott

• Sorry where can I download the hotfix? The link is broken.

Thanks,

• Hello Scott: I installed the Hot-Fix and now every few compilations I receive the following error: 'External component has thrown an exception.' I've never seen this error before; however, I suspect that it is related to the Hot-Fix. I just rebuild the solution and the error goes away, but that's become annoying. Have you seen this error before with respect to the Hot-Fix? If so, can you please provide guidance on how to fix the error.

Thanks,
-Dan

• Hi, I'm not sure if I'm the only one who's having this issue, but: after I installed the hot fix, I am unable to connect to my websites via FrontPage extensions. VWD keeps saying they are not enabled, but IIS says they are. Is this a bug caused by the hot fix?

• Scott, any plans for IIS Server to be able to serve pre-compressed files, e.g. I compress my 200kb javascript et al files as part of the VS2008 deployment process, and upload them to the server as 35k files. If not, why not? For those of us on shared hosting (and I expect thats quite a few!) it's really annoying to be told by the hosting providers they are unwilling to turn on compression because of the 'server overhead'.. no amount of reasoning seems to sway these guys! It would also mean less costs for storage.. before you laugh, believe it or not I'm paying an extra $15 a month as I'm 2mb over a 25mb limit.. and I'm using a cut down version of teleriks's Ajax framework which has 11mb of static javascript etc!

• This is all very good. But where is the rdlc/rdl report designer (Reporting Add-in) for VWDE2008? Shouldn't it have been included as one of the fixes? Only Microsoft Report Viewer Redistributable 2008 is available, but AFAIK, this is not the reports design tool. And what about this (bug?) : AJAX tab in Toolbox of VWDE2008 disappears when target framework in project properties is switched from 3.5 to 2.0 and back to 3.5. Shouldn't it come back? Shouldn't this also be fixed?

• After the fix, I've found two new strange bugs...

1) Jumping between cells in a table using the tab key, does not work properly. If I’m in the first cell and hit the tab key, then instead of jumping to the second cell, I end up in the last cell.

2) Strange paragraphs are showing up in my designer. Trying to delete them does not work. They just pops right back.

Any idea?

• In VS 2005 I could hit delete on a project and it would prompt to delete or remove project. Delete would remove the local folder, remove it from the project and delete from source control. Why isn't this available in VS 2008? It only allows you to remove, so then you have to go delete it from source and the local folder manually. PITA.

• I received an english version of Stefans German dialog. I have VS2008 (TS Dev Ed) installed side by side with VS 2005. And when trying to apply the patch it says: "None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup."

Any ideas?

• Scott,

I see in one of your comments that VBScript intellisense is going to be "re-enabled" in a future service pack. This is great news. My question is, has that been announced in any formal process other than in your comment on this blog post? I ask because there are still many people angrily posting on Connect (FeedbackID=290845) and the forums about this issue. You might want to let them know that this is coming.

• As Børge i have also installed VS 2008 side by side with VS 2005. Both are Team Suite Editions. Perhaps this has something to do with the "no afftected product found" message.

• Hi Stefan and Børge,

>>>>>>> As Børge i have also installed VS 2008 side by side with VS 2005. Both are Team Suite Editions. Perhaps this has something to do with the "no afftected product found" message.

We've discovered that the current patch only works for the English and Japanese editions of VS 2008. We are going to ship a patch that works for the other languages next week.

Hope this helps,

Scott

Have you seen this error before with respect to the Hot-Fix? If so, can you please provide guidance on how to fix the error.

I haven't heard of this issue before. If you can send me email (scottgu@microsoft.com) we can help get to the bottom of it.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hi Ewart,

>>>>>> Scott, any plans for IIS Server to be able to serve pre-compressed files, e.g.

IIS6 by default compresses static files (including .js) files, and caches the compressed versions so there shouldn't be any server overhead. IIS7 actually by default compresses dynamic content as well (so all .aspx pages and any dynamic script served from a .axd handler.

Hope this helps,

Scott

• Hi Alex,

>>>>>>> Hi, I'm not sure if I'm the only one who's having this issue, but: after I installed the hot fix, I am unable to connect to my websites via FrontPage extensions. VWD keeps saying they are not enabled, but IIS says they are. Is this a bug caused by the hot fix?

I haven't heard of an issue like this. Send me email (scottgu@microsoft.com) and we can help get to the bottom of it.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hi Morten,

>>>>>>> 1) Jumping between cells in a table using the tab key, does not work properly. If I’m in the first cell and hit the tab key, then instead of jumping to the second cell, I end up in the last cell. 2) Strange paragraphs are showing up in my designer. Trying to delete them does not work. They just pops right back.

That sounds odd - since the hotfix doesn't actually touch the designer code. If you send me email (scottgu@microsoft.com) we can have someone investigate.

Thanks,

Scott

• I have installed the fix, but are still having the same problems. Any sugestions?

• I don't know whether it is related. However, after installing the Hotfix (the install went flawlessly) my laptop refused to come out of sleep mode. Giving me a winload.exe corrupt error. Just wondered whether anyone else has experience this afte installing the hotfix?

• Hi Tim,

>>>>>>> If these patches aren't going to be available on Microsoft Update / Windows Update, then can you please explain the purpose of having a "Help / Check for Updates" menu option in the VS2008 IDE?

The Check for Updates feature lets you explictly search for updates to VS. I believe Service Packs for VS also show up on MU. However we don't automatically patch your machine for you with VS fixes - instead you download and indicate that you want the patch to be applied.

WU is only for Windows Components. .NET Framework SPs and GDRs are delivered that way (since they ship in Windows), but things like VS and Office aren't covered with it.

Hope this helps,

Scott

• Hi Scott (and anyone else),

>>>>>>> I have installed the fix, but are still having the same problems. Any sugestions?

If you are still having problems with the patch please send me email (scottgu@microsoft.com) and we can help. We've seen a few systems where the patch didn't install correctly, which didn't fix the problems. So far, all but one customer we've helped has seen dramatic performance improvements. If you aren't it could be that the patch didn't apply correctly - in which case we can help via email.

Thanks,

Scott

• Any Timescales on the Patch for VBScript Support. Hate tying people down, but is it weeks or months away?

• Thank you for the update - I've been early adopter of VS2008 and I love it - now even more with most of the anoying bugs out.

• After install the patch, I still got problems when working with asp.net ajax extensions in design mode.
It freezes up for every update or single character added to the page.
Seems to be problems special with UpdatePanelProgress.
Any one else have this problem? Or a solution? :)

Same problem, VS taking up 50% cpu, then freezes after every character I type. I am typing in a table that is in an update panel. Renders the IDE useless.

• Hi Bosse and Tom and Ajay,

>>>>>>>> After install the patch, I still got problems when working with asp.net ajax extensions in design mode.

Send me email (scottgu@microsoft.com) and we can have someone help you with this. We've seen a few cases where the patch has not installed succssfully, which might be the case here.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hey - I'm also getting "None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup." and I have a en-Us version of vista. Anyone else having trouble installing the patch?

• Hi Jon,

>>>>> Hey - I'm also getting "None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup." and I have a en-Us version of vista. Anyone else having trouble installing the patch?

Send me email and we can help check what is going on. It could be that you have an older beta or RC version still on your machine.

Thanks,

Scott

• Thank you for fixing this bug. We use a form containing over 200 user controls which was unusable in VS 2008. The disabling of the HTML validation was a small step in the right direction, but this bugfix solves the problem completely.

• Thanks for the hotfix really easy to install.
Any estimates on when the hotfix for the upgrade of vs2005 unit test projects is due as currently this doesn't work in VS2008 TS Dev?
I currently work more in WPF and really like the improvements in this area additionally the profiling tools are superb!

• The hotfix is great but why not use the auto updating features built into Windows?

• You say this update isn't going to be on Windows Update When you do a Check Updates from the Help menu in Visual Studio, it goes to Microsoft Update. Will this update appear there? If not, why does Visual Studio have functionality to look for updates on Microsoft Update if you won't post updates there?

• I also have "None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup." I have a en-Us version of vista, RTM version of VS 2008 and VS 2005.

• Hi Giacomo,

>>>>>> I also have "None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup." I have a en-Us version of vista, RTM version of VS 2008 and VS 2005.

Thanks,

• This Patch not work on Chinese version VWD
It say i have not relate production installed.

• Great! thanks. downloaded and installed, installed fine.
BUT, it is really sucky to have to login and as well install and use that annoying and less user-friendly file transfer activeX app just to download a 2MB file? To many hurdles and time wasting getting this file.
Why no direct download link after login?

• Do you know the status of the ascx intellesense not working when surrounded by quotes, example: writing out a css class name attribute inline, there is no intellisense or code highlighting.

• Is there any date for SP1 yet?

Thanks.

• Does the hot-fix roll-up benefit windows form development?

Thanks.

• Hi Peter,

This particular hotfix only benefits web development scenarios.

Thanks,

Scott

• Scott,

any news about the language specific patches?

Thanks, Stefan

• Hi,

any word on the release date for the fix that enables Classic ASP/VBScript intellisense?

Thanks!

• Nice job. I installed it after some frustration with slowness and it seems to have made so big enhancements.

THanks!!!

Aaron Newman

• My vs2008 html designer seems to run SLOWER after this hotfix install. Is there any way to uninstall it?

• Hi Stefan,

>>>>>> any news about the language specific patches?

No new news yet - the setup team is working on finishing up the setup patches though. I'll post as soon as they are ready. Sorry for the delay!

Scott

• Hi Paul,

>>>>>> My vs2008 html designer seems to run SLOWER after this hotfix install. Is there any way to uninstall it?

You can use add/remove programs and select the "show updates" option to see the QFE listed. You can then click to uninstall it.

You shouldn't be seeing things get slower with it installed, though. If you want to send me email (scottgu@microsoft.com) we can have someone help investigate.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hi RockGeek,

>>>>>>> any word on the release date for the fix that enables Classic ASP/VBScript intellisense?

That will probably show up in another 4-6 weeks. I'll blog once it is available.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hi Alex,

>>>>>> I have installed this hot fix and am still getting the problem when I have multiple control sets on here.

If you can send me email (scottgu@microsoft.com) with details on this I can get someone to help.

Thanks,

Scott

• Hi Scott,
Can you please mention any information regarding if any updates to WPF designer or WPF capabilities of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 are to follow?.I have so much trouble with the designer and am forced to use Blend Over it.Looking at Visual Studio and Blend I see to different HACKS actually ! man :-(

• ScottGU - good man.
Thanks for the update. I am running VWD 2005 now but as with most techies, I'd like to use the latest version!
thanks,
RG

• Hi Scott,
Thanks for the update. Does this update fix the formatting issues with the VS 2008? VS 2008 does not format the line when entered ";" or "}".

• WOW, Thank you. Things were fine with VS 2008 originally, but today I thought my PC was dying. This fix improves performance on VS 2008 drastically.

THANKS!
:)

• I'm having a big issue with the fact that if a css file is placed inside a subfolder of a theme (ie App_Themes\Default\css\default.css) the designer does not detect the css file. This was not the case in VS 2005. It is a major pain for me because I maintain a large Theme with lots of images and css files for different asp components. Keeping them in subfolders makes it much easier to work with. I'm hoping a fix will come soon. I saw somewhere that this is to be addressed in VS2008 SP1 on another site. If this is the case when can we expect SP1 to be released?

• When the version for VS2008 Spanish will be here?

• What about asp vbscript intellisence any plugin???
This is very important key for old asp proyect.

• Hey Scott.

I get a dead link trying to get to the hotfix download. Is it still available?

• Even after the patch installation for vs2008, when i save the content its just hanging up .

• When are the hotfixes for the german vs2008 version available?
Any new informations?

• I have also noticed that it is taking Visual Studio 2008 an excessive amount of time to save an aspx file. For example I have a medium to large sized web form (approximately 250 controls to take input and validate 80 fields). If I simply type in one letter on the aspx to change it and then click save it takes 4-5 seconds to save the file. When I remove that value and click save a second time it takes the same amount of time. This is annoying because VS2005 saved files instantly and would load them within a couple seconds in my browser. I have a very high end PC that I work on so there is no processor, memory, or hard drive performance issues. You guys may want to look into that for the Service Pack.

• I am still unable to install this hotix on a germen VS2008. Will there be a compatible version soon? Any news on this??

• When will the hotfixes for the german vs2008 version be made available?
Any new informations?

• Thx. It works on german systems now.

• Hi Scott,

Useful Blog...

I have 2 questions:

1) Why does control multi selection using either CTRL or SHIFT not work in VS 2008/VWD2008 Express? I have used this in VS2005 for alignment of controls.

2) When will SP1 of VS2008 be released?

Many thanks again.

• Is it just me or is anyone else getting sick and tired of these so called upgrades and hotfixes. The whole thing stinks I am sick of supposedly upgrading and then spending 6 months applying hotfixes and getting back up to speed. This would never be acceptable in any other industry. And no this hotfix isnt making a difference to my build speed!
