IIS Documentation Writer Job Description

Are you looking for a fun, exciting, dynamic job with the team who's developing the next generation Web server? Come and be a part of the Internet Information Services (IIS) User Education team as a Technical Writer. The IIS team has a great opportunity for an experienced writer to help create administrator documentation for the next version of IIS, including deployment scenarios, task topics, technical reference, troubleshooting, and UI help. If you’re interested in the Internet and server technologies, this could be the job for you.

In this role, you'll work closely with the IIS product team on feature design and reviews, planning and outlining topics, and then creating content and guiding it through the editorial and technical review process. You will also work closely with the IIS writing team to maintain consistency among topics and participate in the process of redesigning our documentation set. You will actively research our customer's needs, respond to their concerns, and help determine standards for common documentation issues. As you grow in this role, you'll be expected to help lead small and then large initiatives for the team. In addition, you will have opportunities to participate in the integration of our help with other teams’ documentation to present a unified Web platform administration and development story.

You could be a good candidate if you have strong writing and communication skills, at least three years of work experience on technology documentation projects, and at least four years work experience in a computer-related discipline; familiarity with Microsoft and/or open source server technologies is a plus; exposure to IIS, Apache, networking, or scripting is a big plus. You should also have an understanding of the common challenges facing IT administrators. You must be proficient in HTML, Word, and Excel; experience with XML, VSS, Product Studio, and DocStudio is a plus. The work is faced paced and you will own multiple feature areas and projects, so you must have good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize among multiple work items. You should also have the ability to meet aggressive deadlines while making progress on your priority work items. Developing good working partnerships with various members of the product and writing team will be critical to your success. We prefer candidates with a BA or BS degree in technical communications or computer science; however, certificate programs and work experience may substitute. Writing samples are a must!
