From Subversion to CVSNT...

Well, I installed CVSNT yesterday...  (sorry Mark!)  I was using Subversion for the last month or so but I have had too many problems with errors when I would go to check code in.  I did a Google search and found many others that have had the same problems but being a non-*nix user, we don't get too much help or sympathy.  The proverbial straw was that I had major problem on one of my drives and I thought "hmm.  this is a perfect time to get my latest source code out of subversion"  Well, it got some of the code but not all of it.  Hopefully, I have better luck with CVSNT.

I have looked into the GotDotNet Workspaces but I really like being able to check in/out stuff from Windows Explorer (I absolutely LOVE TortoiseCVS for CVS and TortoiseSVN for Subversion)  If Subversion had worked, I would have stayed with that because I liked what they have done with that product.   Of course, I would still have to use the CVS client for my SourceForge projects.

I wonder how long before a replacement for SourceSafe comes out...  SourceGear Vault looks great too but money is tight and free is good right now.

  • After watching the Subversion lists for a while I noticed the Subversion team could be a little prickly when it came to new user questions too.

I think you will find the opposite with CVSNT, there are a few really cluey people on the mailling list that are very quick to jump in and help out. Tony (the author of the software) is really responsive and helpful too.

I totally agree with you about Tortoise. I have never found a more usable interface to source control ever. I don't use ANY IDE integration anymore.

  • In all fairness to the Subversion guys. (And I did mention this to Brenton this morning)

He was installing TortiseSVN, and not the Win32 Subversion build.

Damian -- in response to your remarks, there is a subversion "users" list now.

Again...that being said...I have no desire to run Subversion under Win32.

I have experienced no problems under Gentoo Linux, for those who may be curious.

OK, that is a good thing. I stopped reading a few months back, and that was just the dev list.

Yeah that was the feeling I got from it too. I think Subversion has a great future, I just decided to put my early adopter tendencies aside and get back to work ;)
