FireFox Setup

I used to use an link to a checklist of things that I used to setup firefox from scratch but that link no longer works so I'm going to create my own checklist for my future benefit and maybe to the benefit of others.

First off over at Tech Support Alert there is a very nice set of step by step instructions for installing Firefox

Once Firefox is installed I install the following Extensions:

  • Tabbrowser Preferences - Which allows for various tab settings primarily I use it to force internal or external links to open in a new tab and never a new window.
  • Focus Last Selected Tab (FLST) - This brings focus to the last selected tab. So when I'm doing a google search and click on a link that opens in another tab when I close that tab it focuses back on the tab with the search results.
  • miniT(drag) - Sometimes I like to reorder my tabs so this extension allows for the tabs to be reorder by dragging and dropping them where you want.
  • Download Sort - This allows me to manage my downloads easier. You can do settings based on file extension or keywords. The settings allow you to organize your download directory. It can automatically create sub-directories based on date, domain, file extension or url hierarchy.

On top of those extensions I also install the RoboForm Adapter which allows me to manage all my website login usernames and passwords, and I also use it as my bookmark manager. It works well because if I have to run IE sometimes there is a RoboForm toolbar there as well and I still have all my logins and bookmarks in IE.

  • Wes, You still rock.

I'd been missing the miniT drag plugin - hadn't seen it on the main firefox extension site so I just thought that it hadn't been ported to v1.0.

Now I can get back to browsing the way I like to instead of having to deliberately click links in a certain order! Thanks for the heads up, man.
