IBM is dropping Itanium support
Citing tepid market demand, the world's largest server seller has for the time being ceased development of an electronics package called a chipset that's at the heart of Big Blue's Itanium servers.

Win64 for x64 Build 1433 (aka RC2) is installed
Last night, I installed the latest Win64 for x64 build onto my x64 system. Everything seems to be up and running just fine. I've only gotten one or two items installed onto it, nothing really exciting. As far as I can tell, build 1433 is running just fine.

Firewire drive on Win64 for x64 works!
This is very cool. I decided after checking out the USB drive this morning that I would check out my firewire drive this afternoon. I plugged the drive in, ran the "Disk Management" MMC snapin to assign a drive letter and there is was. That was such a cool thing. This worked on Win2k3 for x64 build 1289, aka RC1.

USB Memory Drive with Windows 2003 for x64
I just plugged my 128 meg USB drive into my AMD64 system running Windows 2003 for x64 (Win64 for x64) Release Candidate 1 (Build 1289). Low and behold, the drive was recognized and there were my files. Very Nice.

Another stake in the heart for IA64 as MS axes WinXp for IA64
According to neowin.net (and you can obviously take this for what it is therefore worth), MS is going to drop support for the Itanium architecture on WindowsXP and merely support Itanium on Windows 2003 Server. I bet that soon, Itanium won't be supported there either, but that's personal opinion.

Sql Server and Visual Studio 2005 on Win64 for x64
If you have an x64 system running Win64 for x64 and are interested in running Sql Server 2005, be aware that the Sql Server Management Studio (Beta 2, October CTP, and December CTP) does not currently run under Win64 for x64. If my memory serves correctly, the Sql Server Management Studio should run within the WOW system when Sql Server 2005 hits beta 3 (at least that is what I was told the last time I asked). You can also use the Sql Server Management Studio from a 32 bit system to manage an x64 installation, but I haven't tried that.

Express products on Win64 for x64
I've gotten a couple of questions about the Express products running on Win64 for x64 through my blog. I thought I would share what I know (I don't work for Microsoft), which isn't much, and should definitely not be considered to be fact, in any way shape or form.
