Internal DNS Issues

I have a firewall appliance that has a built-in DHCP server. All of my internal boxes have internal (i.e. 10.0.0.x) IP addresses, some of which are static and some are DHCP'd.

I can browse to any web site on the whole internet - except the three that I host on a little laptop here in my office. Does anyone know why this might be? It just times out while looking for all three sites while every other site comes up very quickly.

  • It sounds like you're trying to browse to a web site that you host within your local network. In this case your request will actually go out of your firewall because the www.mysite.com address will resolve to the public address (i.e. 200.10.10.x) and your browsing PC knows that's "outside" not "inside".

The request will go out, and your firewall will then realize that the address it's supposed to forward this request to is itself. This is usually where the problem starts.

Most firewall/routers will have some option on them that if you turn the option on you can browse that local server just as if it were a regular public server outside of your firewall.

On my WRT54G this option is referred to as "loopback". Depending on what device you're using, it may have a different name.
