I've been using MindTouch since their Noatak release, to create and syndicate content for my non-profit organization. I haven't experienced any of the issues mentioned above. As with any wiki, there's going to be work involved in tuning to you needs, but I've been happy with it.
I don't know what Wik.is is, but it sounds like a forked project.
