IT jobs going overseas

This article was on the front page of our Sunday paper here in New Haven, CT. How bad does everyone think this is? I know jobs are tight and the impact of losing jobs to cheap labor may not be bad now, but this article says it may be worse than the loss of manufacturing jobs.

Out to sea

By the way, someone sent me an email referring to my post about C# vs VB .Net. It ended up in the junk mail folder in hotmail and I saw it just as I emptied the folder. Since I can't get it back because junk mail deletions do not go into the trash can, would you mind resending it? Thanks!

  • hi

see my url "index2.html" links.... all those screen shot bash/linux tutorial stuff??? Thats how I spend my days... manning a help desk at a web hosting company and writing/posting tutorials (yes I personally wrote each tutorial) to make my job easier.

... and I worry about the business I'm in. I see major layoffs and companies going overseas. If I lost my job ($51,000 annual) at this help desk I know damn well I'd be grabbin' the first Walmart shifts available b-cuz there ain't nothin' else!!! Our company hired a couple of new help desk analysts, one's master's degree computer science grad from Yale U, with 3 years bio-tech computer programming experience, and there he is... sitting next to me talking to customers on the phone about Outlook Express and how to do a traceroute (among other things of course) because he can't find a job

  • I have been employed in the IT industry for 25 years and luckily have never lost my job. However, I strongly feel that if I lost my job, I would be selling real estate tomorrow because of the job market. The real problem here is the fact the our government officials no longer represent the majority. They only represent the rich of America. Bush states that the move of jobs overseas is good for the country. However, he has nothing to back up the comment. When the first round of jobs were lost because of the Nafta and GAT treaties, we were told that this was good because only low paying jobs were being lost, which forced the population to become educated. I bought into this. However, now that I am seeing educated jobs (IT, Architects, Enigneers, etc) leave America, my feelings have chaged. Once the rich saw how much money could be made by moving manufacturing jobs overseas, they asked themselves how could we make more. Well, now you are seeing the next phase, which will make them even more money because of the differences in salaries. They have bought the politicians and here we go again. This will have a bigger impact on America then 9/11 and terrorism in the long run. The only way we can fight back is to elect politicians that stand for American jobs. Forget the hogwash of 'protectionism'. This has nothing to do with trade and I do not care what anyone says, jobs are not part of trade. I have been an avid Republican for many years. However, this Presidential election, I will be voting for the person who embraces this issue. At this time, it looks like John Kerry. I never thought I would be voting for a Democrat, but here I go. If we do not give these pooliticians the boot, our children and grandchildren will have a bleak future. We have to stop the raping of America by the rich. Otherwise, we will be looking at society made up of only rich and poor. The middle class will be gone.

  • new subject plz people, common

  • New subject? I posted that a year ago. Check the date.

  • A couple of week ago I had the sasserB virus on my PC. I called customer support and low and behold it was an IT worker that was at a help desk overseas. I could not understand this person: what he was saying or what point he was trying to make. To sum it up, I want to be able to talk to someone I can understand and relate to. Outsourceing I fear will continue to be a burdon on American workers, losing jobs, and the public who cannot understand oversea company workers due to the language barriar. Factory workers are feeling the burdon of globalism, still. This low cost mass movement of goods and services is great for business trying to keep down costs, but who knows; in the long run won't it really hurt our economy. Citizens need to invest in our economy in order for the budget deficit to decline. Allen Greenspan can only give so many tax cuts before he starts to raise them again (which I hear he is about to in the next couple of months). I would like to see jobs remain in the United States but it will not happen. I guess we will have to rely on our largest trade partners--Canada and Mexico to fill our economic gap.

  • WHAT A BUNCH OF CRY BABIES! SHUT UP! AND GET ONE OF THOSE AWSOME K-MART JOBS OR YOU CAN BE A Mc D's COOK. WHATS WRONG WITH A REAL JOB WHERE U ACTUALLY DO SOME REAL WORK?
AMERICA HAS BECOME THE LAND OF THE CRY BABIES... BOO HOO. I DON'T SEE ALL THE OTHER COUNTRIES CRYING BESIDES WE ALWAYS TOLD THEM THAT WE AS AMERICANS CAN COMPETE WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD.
    WELL... PROVE IT... A M E R I C A N S.

ps. DON'T FORGET TO WAVE YOUR FLAGS.
