I bet on Silverlight...

I have seen a lot of talk about Microsoft's new product, Silverlight. First of all, its name is a very funny joke with Flash. Have you ever thought which color is the light os your camera's flash?? Well, when you take a picture, a silver light just blink to make it all clear on the pic, funny, isn't it? So is Silverlight a real adversary of flash?

If I have to bet, I would put my coins on Silverlight. The integration with .NET  Framework will just make things easy. Have you ever tried to write a flash animation with some logic on it? If so you know that you have to lear the flash's native script language. OK, learning something it's not so bad, but if you can write the same thing with a language you know and often use.

I'll write somethings using Silverlight on the next days and when I'll post here my first impressions but, as far I know, it's an amazing product and its integration with XAML will just make things easier for us!

Tell me what's your opinion about Microsoft Silverlight.

That's all...

See ya!@!

  • Is the color of the light silver? Is that a technical term or your observation (that it's silver)? Just curious...

  • I think the fact that you can already use a language that you know doesn't weigh quite as much as hyped. There's a learning curve either way; you have to learn WPF. Converting people from Flash into SL it's gonna be tough, and new people will look at the technical reasons as the first criteria. Which brings me to what I think will determine its success or failure: How well it performs and how seamlessly it will integrate with your computer. As far as performance, so far with 1.0 I've been underwhelmed. I haven't yet taken the time to study it, but I've looked at sites that use it. The stress on the CPU is more than what Flash demands. Especially with video in full screen mode -- at least on my computer. Somebody needs to look into that, and fast!

The problem is that MS hasn't yet learned that first impressions matter a lot. That doesn't mean that it won't make it in the end, just that it will take longer than it could have...

  • PBZ, first off all the joke about the color was just for understand why the name Silverlight.

About the adoption, actually, the large use of flash will be the great challenge for SL. But, on the other side, all developers like to learn something new. I haven't seen the CPU stress you told, on my machine it's real light, but as far as I study it, I'll post here my first impressions.

And finally, about the first impression on SL, MS still have to learn... but never is late to do that... :)))))....

See ya and thank you for your reading and comments...
