"Look Ma, One Hand!"

I have a love-hate relationship with many of the articles on the Research site at microsoft.  The descriptions of their various projects are always greatly intriguing with tantelizing glimpses at their effort, but they are equally often bereft of any specific details, examples, of even photos of their results.

On the other hand, if they did give more details, we early-adopters would probably have such gadget-envy anxiety we would put ourselves in the hospital....

The article I read today about their ideas on creating a new simplified input device left my blood-pressure a bit high as I deeply wished I could plunder the riches of Microsoft's Research division....or at the very least, to have been invited to attened their TechFest.   Alas, maybe Don and Chris will share such info on their blogs one day....or better yet, maybe they will envagelize the Research team members on the virtues of public blogging!!

  • Most of the innovation in this device is actually Quikwriting itself, which is documented and implemented on multiple PDAs.

I think most of the current implementations are PDA and stylus-based. But it is easy to imagine using a joystick as the input device (I saw a mention of using a little stick on a phone for text input, somewhere). I is also easy to imagine using a touchpad without the PDA around it.

Both of these could be implemented today if you get a Quikwriting license.

Personally, I haven't tried it long enough to get to a fast input rate, but I have some concern with typing speed and RSIs.

    Cheers,
