Microsoft links Outlook to Lotus

Microsoft released on Monday a software add-on for the 2003 and 2002 versions of Outlook that allows the e-mail clients to work with a server running IBM's Lotus Domino software. The Notes Connector is available now for free download. It works with versions 5 and 6 of Domino and allows Outlook to retrieve messages, calendar items, address book entries and to-do lists stored on the server.

Lotus includes an e-mail program of its own, but IBM has found that many customers prefer to work with Outlook, which is part of Microsoft's widespread Office productivity package.

Working in a shop that uses Domino and Lotus Notes I've come to appreciate Outlook more and more.  If the server is busy, which is 100% of the time here, you can refresh your Notes app and it will freeze the machine for up to 5 minutes.  The only option for new email warning is an annoying pop-up.  Rules do not always work. And the list goes on.  I'm going to see if we can get permission to load Outlook and the Plug-in and see how it all works together.

  • I got the outlook connector to work smoothly but I don't have permission to view other people's calendar. I could do this in Lotus easily.

    Has anyone face this problem?

  • I've actually not tried. I have crashed the connector by creating repeating appointments. It appears that the two systems are not compatible on *how* it stores a calendar event or repeating event. Because of this, I tend to stay away from doing much with the calendar...
