[Laws] John Tobler's Really Readit Rule

Before you willy nilly adopt or use some new word, principle, law, rule, concept, example, framework, tool, or technology, try this.

John Tobler's Really Readit Rule:

"Before subjecting others to it, understand it!  Read all the words intelligently; read each word thoughtfully; don't forget to read what words aren't there."

By the way, that even applies to this rule!

  • This is most difficult when you are presented with material with high levels of noise compared to the amount of signal (such as many tech books).

It presupposes that there was an attempt to write each word intellegently and thoughtfully.

  • This law is some what simulare to: "When all else fails read the instructions" Myself being a technical writer, believes in the written instructions. How many problems have been caused due to oversight in understand what actually needs to be done compare to what really needs to be done. "READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!".
