How to view Outlook 2010 Internet headers for an email

In Outlook 2010 getting to the Internet headers for an email has been moved to the File Menu for a particular email message.

In Outlook 2007 (and previous versions) you used to be able to view the internet headers of an email message by right-clicking on any email message and choosing the “Options” menu option from the context menu that appeared.  In Outlook 2010 this has moved to the File menu.

To get to the Internet Headers of an email in Outlook 2010:

Open the email message in its own window (by double clicking on the message).

Then go to File > Info for that message:

And then in the right-hand pane click on the Properties button

This will bring up the Properties dialog with the Internet headers located at the bottom:

Missing simething but don' know what.

    thamk you

  • thank you for actual pertinent information ! :D

  • Thanks! Leave it to Microsoft to take something so basic and simple and make it difficult. How about some consistency like right-click on a message then select "show Internet Email Headers" or "Show Detailed Email Headers"
At any rate, thanks for the info, I was ready to call Microsoft and complain.

  • In older versions of Outlook you were able to get to this properties page without having to open the email first. We could right-click on the email in your inbox and select properties to view this page. Is that no longer possible? Sometimes if I am not familiar with the sender, I go to the properties page before I open it to find out a little more about its origin. I don't see how to do that now.

  • @Steve - that's what I was looking for too when I stumbled on this page. After poking some more I found you can add the old "Message Options" command to the ribbon so you can check the headers before you open the message. Go to File -> Options -> Customize Ribbon, set the "Choose commands from" dropdown to "Commands Not in the Ribbon", and scroll down to find "Message Options...". You have to add it to a custom group, not one of the existing groups. I'm sure you can find help on customizing the ribbon if you need it.
