Windows 7 Beta - mounting and burning ISO (for free)

ms-win7.gif

My Acer AspireOne netbook doesn't have a CD/DVD drive so I installed a DVD drive in an external hard disk drive USB enclosure.  This works great but many times, I don't burn ISO files to CD/DVD so I want to mount them so they appear like a physical drive.  You can buy some utilities to do that but there are a few available for free but will they work on Windows 7 Beta?

I first tried MagicDisc but it didn't worked at all.  I then tried Virtual Clone Drive but right after installing it, nothing happened.  I then rebooted and bingo!  This utility couldn't be simpler to use: just double click on a ISO file and it is mounted as a drive and ready to use.

Nice sheep!

So what about burning an ISO to a CD/DVD?  Couldn't be simpler, it's built in Windows 7!  Just right click on an ISO file, select Open With and Windows Disc Image Burner.  Nice!

  • And I installed Windows 7 on my Aspire One using Clone Drive to mount to ISO on a network share, worked first time.

  • Which version of virtual clone drive did you use as I tried and Windows 7 fails to restart (will not shutdown) after the install and no other drivers can be installed afterwards

  • Paul: The current version (5.4.1.1)

  • Hello,
    i tried the latest daemontools
but after restart (installation requires it) the install Process always starts again
    so, doesn´t work :(

  • Stefan: I think that daemontools also installs some kind of spyware.

  • Thanks for the Pismo File Mount segustion works great. :)

  • Pismo File Mount work awesome.. Thanks :)

  • ok

    virtual CD drive works fine

  • daemon tools doesn't install spyware, but a low level "driver" which seems to be not supported by w7 right now

  • the spyware he's talking about is or was included with the tool bar. just unclick toolbar easy fix

  • I've installed the Virtual clone drive, and then the win7 doesn't want to install anything else XD. Every setup stops or verry slowly (for example Nod32 takes 1H 30mins to install XDXD). Any other program you know to mount iso-s ?
    thanks Momo

  • freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee good thanks

  • Unforutunatley, DaemonTools won't work on neither Windows 7, nor on Windows Server 2008 R2. Not because it can't work but simply because it installs that tricky SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD) layer driver which doesn't install because it can't determine the windows version. Otherwise, I believe it would work with no problems. MSFT did a great work and everything works fine on Windows 7. The only problem is 3rd-party apps that fail to install when unable to determine the operating system version.
Thanks, Guy, I'll try the alternative one.
BTW, it's a pity MSFT did not include the ability to mount ISO. Yes, they've finally included the burner tool, but... Those Linux guys have their mount/iso for forever. (With availability of PowerShell this seems to be the only thing when Linux has something that Windows doesn't have.)

  • I've used MagicDisc (v2.7.97) on both Vista-32 and Vista-64 with no problems, but I can confirm that on Windows7-64 it does not work. In fact, it was one of the first pieces of software I installed (since most of my DVDs are saved as ISOs on a file share, and it seems like MagicDisc has both made my file system un-usable and the uninstall fails!

I'm going to check out the services and the registry and see what I can disable, but I may have to re-install Windows7 on account of MagicDisc.

    Cheers,

  • ...a quick follow-up on my last comment about MagicDisc...
I think my particular problems came from the fact that my machine is using Intel Raid which shows as a SCSI Controller device in device manager, and MagicDisc creates another SCSI controller device. After disabling and uninstalling the MagicDisc SCSI controller in devoce manager, then rebooting, I was once again able to access my file system through the computer explorer, and was able to uninstall MagicDisc.

Cheers and good luck to everyone braving the frontiers of Windows7,
    CList

  • so Pismo File Mount Audit is the solution for windows 7 ->64 ????

  • Windows 7 64bit. Clone Drive and Magic ISO caused problems severe enough to require restore to a save point before installation. Daemon tools would not install. Alcohol 52% would not install. Pismo works great. Does seem to have some limits but for simply mounting .ios files, it works!!

  • Thanks, I installed Virtual Drive clone shortly after installing Windows 7, build 7000, and it works like a charm, this programme is as mentioned "light-weight" and it does do the job effeciently and worked after I restarted. I did however try daemon tools out first, but after reading their forums they don't support "Beta Operating Systems" which I find is =) (Insert Bad Word)
