PDC Longhorn Build - System Requirements

Does anyone know what the system requirements are for the PDC build of Longhorn?  I have a dual PII workstation that I was going to use as my Longhorn machine, but I don't know if dual processors will be supported with this build of Longhorn.  BTW, this dual processor machine, although it uses PIIs, really rocks with WinXP, so I don't think horsepower will be an issue, but dual processors might be.

If it doesn't support dual processor machines, then I'll have to buy a refurb thru Dell refurbs (I typically buy refurbs, they tend to be cheaper, but not always).

I was wondering the same thing.

Thought I might set up a cluster of Crays just in case...

  • Longhorn....3DUI....ActiveX 9.0....so you need at least an ATI9600 or FX5200 Video card. So a 300W power supply will be needed and you had better have 512mb of DDR toped off with a P4 3.0 or AMD 3000XP.

  • That's Direct X 9.0, were not in Kansas anymore...!

  • The dual processor strategy is cheaper. When I want to upgrade, I price the highest speed processor, then find a slower processor that is 1/2 the price. The slower processor will usually be 2/3 the speed of the highest speed. So, I buy two for the price of one and get a dual processor that is faster in total than a high end single processor. In a year or two, you can upgrade the processors. Or build another and use the older machine as a server.

  • We don’t know what exactly the system requirements are but a 128MB graphics card surely is a must to handle Longhorn’s innovative graphics engine. As the desktop interface is going to host more info than ever before, it’s high time to get a large screen, high-resolution monitor and prepare for first looks of Longhorn!

  • bahh I run LongHorn whith a P4 1.70 512mb of ram and a 9000series ati 9200 128mb radeon card

  • I agree with richard medina.

    My sys is P4 CELERON!!!! 1.7ghz, 512mb ram, GeForce 2 MX400 32mb.

The key here was RAM!!! I was running this particular box on 256. It was unusable. 512mb (regardless of what MS may eventually claim) is gonna be the real minumum. For giggles I dropped another 512mb (1gb total) in it briefly. Anybody power using their machines will find this to be their target. However, for a neat toy to play with 512mb is fine.

  • I have a P4 1.5ghz, 1024mb ram, radeon 7500 64mb and Longhorn runs great

  • I am running Longhorn on an AMD Athlon XP Barton 2600 with 1 gb of Mushkin Level II pc3500 and a MSI Geforce 4 Ti4600 and its seems to run like a champ. My board is an Asus A7N8X Deluxe.

  • hex..i've run longhorn on my sister P3933MHZ pc with 1024 MB SDRAM since my 3000+ fry up last week..

    longhorn runs smoothly without problems

  • Hey Josh, he wasnt talking about what OS DirectX 9.0 was available for...he was talking about DX 9.0 compatible Vid Cards.
