Plasma TV and XBox360

So last night I finally replaced my parents old 24" Sony Trinitron TV. It has done me well, though it was getting rather old. I believe, though my folks will disagree, that they had the TV when we lived on Guam, which would mean it's from 1987 or 1988.

So I went with a 50" Plasma from Panasonic. I ended up getting a great deal on a commercial unit the TH-50PHD8UK. It's the same as the TH-50PX50U but it doesn't have a few things. It doesn't have speakers, an HD tuner, or HDMI/DVI inputs. Being that I saved around $1200 by getting this unit I can live without the features, besides the only feature I'd need are the inputs, and I bought a card for HDMI for the unit for ~$120! So, with shipping, the card, and the cost of the unit I still saved probably $1200.

I mounted the TV to the wall last night, and hooked up my new Samsung DVD player with upconversion, I'll post more about that later.

The next thing on my list, after direct TV HD tivo, is an XBOX 360.

I'm excited as heck to see what the 360 will look like on this new monitor, if any of you softies out there have any hookups you be sure to let me know!

More info and pictures will be posted on my blog at http://chrishammond.com/ for now though I'm headed home for lunch to play with the TV!

  • you save $ by spend $? plasma's average life is around 3 years, good luck!

  • Do some research. Plasma screens are now supposedly good for 60k hours.

  • Right, The Panasonic's half life is supposed too be around 20yrs... Nice Choice!!! Enjoy.

  • I got the same TV, good choice! Just don't leave too long on still images or solid GUI elements or you will get burn-in marks on your plasma.

  • No burn in marks on my TV, and it's sat plenty long on a still picture.

  • I purchased a Pioneer Plasma 5070 very similar to the Pioneer you purchased, except it has the inputs, tuner and so on, and I can tell you that I went through the break in period (400 hours actually) before I hooked up my new Xbox 360, and I had no image retention from watching TV at all, but after leaving my screen on the "trade players" page of an EA Sports game, for about 20 minutes, I am now trying everything to get rid of the image retention (which could be burn in, I am not sure).

I would strongly caution you when using your Xbox360 (or any gaming device with static images) as it is not a myth. I can send pics of my screen if needed, and it is a painful site. (It isn't overly noticable, but you can see some of the lines from the trade player's screen, especially on white backgrounds, and it is really annoying, especially for a unit I purchased in November.)

I serious considered the unit you purchased but I got a great deal on the Pioneer one, and I purchased it. I am sure you will be very happy with the 8UK. Just be careful when gaming.

  • I've not had any problems with image burn, and I've had static screens up for over an hour before. Sounds like you shoulda got the panny

  • I recently bought the Pioneer pdp-507xda 50" plasma. Do you guys think it is safe to play xbox 360? ...and if so, what is the maximum time i should be playing?
    Thanks

  • I hear that Panasonic is the ONLY real PDP to get if you plan on playing games or putting your PC into it. I guess the new 9th gen pannels have new phosperous of something in them that make IR a thing of the past.

    Just what I heard.

  • You must of got a cheap plasma joe, my Panasonic has never had any burnin issues

  • I have a 50in Panasonic Plasma and I have NO problems with burn in. I've played tons and tons of Xbox360 games on it. I've raced in TDU for 4 hours straight with the speed and map stuck to the bottom.

You will get image retention because the phospers burn hot, but leave your TV on for a few minutes with a moving picture the whole time and it will white wash it..

I've been gaming for 3 months now with my new plasma and I have no burn it. It's a thing of the past.

  • I have just bought Panasonic Plasma TH-50PX7OA..and i would love to hook up my xbox 360 up to it as it does have the HDTV cable with it...can i play the xbox on it??if i can how long for will it burn the screen??

  • I just bought a Panasonic 42PZ700U. I followed the directions (turning down picture, keeping image on whole screen, switching inputs) and so on. But I also played some Dead Rising on the second day I had the TV. Even though I made sure to change the picture while playing, pause to get a different display, switch inputs, and so on I now have (clearly visible with very dark / very light media) in the lower right-hand corner of my screen the word 'KILLED' and some retention of the lower-left HUD as well. Haven't turned on the game in more than a day and have been cycling through all kinds of inputs yet it's still there. I can't tell if it's fading or not, as I can still read the word 'KILLED' if I get close to the screen.

I'm now terrified of playing any game with a HUD on this TV out of fear I will burn the screen. Is there anything I can do?

  • I'll have to go with the burn-in people. I've a Panasonic TH-42PV7F plasma TV and also played some Dead Rising. Now, I usually don't play more than 2 hours, as I don't have the time for it. But like many other people I can now see the word 'KILLED' in the bottom right corner. I don't know if this will fade away or stay. I remember I had some similar effects with Rainbox Six Vegas, but that seems to be gone now. Note BTW that I've never had any problems like this with my PS3. So, I don't know if this is a 360 problem or just limited to some games. Anyway, I find it rather unacceptable. Any suggestions would be welcome!

  • Guys with the burn in. if you are expereincing the "ghost-image" all you have to do is use the whiteout option or dvd (google it) and you will get rid of the image.

If you leave your tv on for hours paused on the same screen, you may get a phospor burn, which will be there forever. Not covered under warranty either.

  • I've got the Panasonic 50" as well and just noticed some burn in last night. As this post has been going for some time, I'm interested to know if anyone has noticed the "ghosting" going away since you originally posted?

  • Don't play your Xbox 360's for more than two hours in one sitting, unless you are feeling lucky.I am on my third 360 >:(.*shakes his fist at MS*.

  • OK, no burn in to worry about. The Ghosting went away overnight. Have since had the machine on for many hours at a time with no worries.

    Best Regards

  • I just wanted to help any recently new plasma owners with purchases after early 2008. Just a little myth-busting to relieve some anxiety. I have researched this an LCD's for quite some time now prior to my first plasma purchase. I am not assuring you that I am the resident display expert by any means here. But just following some simple guidelines about the health of your plasma dealing with idleness on still images, contrast, brightness, and so on will help to alleviate your pain/fears of adding your 360 to a big beautiful plasma display. Obviously manufacturer, model, and engine/screen qualities will come into play. Can you enjoy the same endless hours of game play on any title with or without a HUD like you would on a SDTV? I would guess probably not. I think the real question is, what are you looking for and what are your gaming needs? You can't go buy a Lamborghini and drive it for 12 hours straight at 180 miles an hour without damaging it. So why would you abuse your plasma by trying to compare it to a lesser brillant LCD or SDTV tube television? If you take care of your plasma, do your research, get the facts, tweak the display, and READ THE MANUAL you should be well on your way to enjoying your HD gaming on your amazing plasma screen. Here is a link to help you with some common urban legends about Plasma TV's. Enjoy.
