Carbonite Backup

Last week my notebook's hard drive failed. All the data was lost. A couple of months before, I've subscribed to an online backup service, Carbonite. I was able to recover all the data I cared for, so that's why I'm recommending it.

Basically, you pay $5/month regardless the space you use. You select the folders you want to back up, and it backs them up silently when you connect to the internet. You can suspend the backup process if you need to use your bandwidth for something else.

Use this link to download a free 15-day trial subscription to Carbonite, and get an extra free month of service when you buy (and 3 months free for myself;) : http://www.carbonite.com/raf/signup.aspx?RAFUserUID=2508&a=0

  • Thanks Thomas!

I've also emailed them about the extension list. I actually had some .idx files, and I lost those. Fortunately, they were indexes that could easily be recovered.

  • On the other hand, if you do a Find on a folder with that entire list... you get a list of all the exceptions. Select-all, click backup now :)

I think that works, I haven't looked much more closely since I am still trying this service out too.. I'm a developer so I'm highly concerned myself.

  • On the other other hand... I want to backup a few files which live in the Windows directory... fonts, for instance. Damnit.

  • Carbonite does not backup flash .swf files ! It probably doesn't matter if you still have the matching .fla file and you can add the .swf file to (with right mouse button)

  • It's a problem to backup a subfolder (like Windows > Fonts) but if you add the fonts to a "stand alone folder" carbonite will backup it. I have add the Windows > Fonts folder to my SyncBack and it works great
