What is the problem with Marketing People?
Why is there such a problem with Marketing People? I have dealt with numerous ones thru the years. None of them will ever listen to how the consulting business works. They just want to launch into selling something, anything, and they won't do the necessary homework and prepatory work, like understanding consulting, understanding who potential customers are, understand who the wrong potential customers are (you would be amazed at the number of worthless meetings I have gone to where the customer wants a custom developed package for the cost of something at CompUSA), creating marketing documentation, using a package like ACT! or Goldmine to document what is going on. Just this week, a lady that has worked for my father told him that she didn't need to know any of that stuff and she acted like she didn't need to learn anything about a computer. What is wrong these marketing people?

Sql Server Yukon book proposal
I decided to post this here with the hope that a book publisher or another author might be interested. This was a tentative Outline / TOC Sql Server Yukon book that myself and few others had proposed to a couple of publishers. When we first shopped it, we got the response that Yukon was too far out but that they would keep us in mind. We have never heard back from anyone despite several followups. My guess is that the bloody state of the technical book publishing industry is to blame. If you are a publisher and are interested, click the contact link on my blog to get ahold of me.

Now we know where the $50 billion is going
I just caught a blimpse of CNBC @ lunch and I see where Microsoft has announced what they are going to do with the $50+ billion dollars in assets and cash that they have. Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, and Sam Palmisano, who is the CEO of IBM, were having a hand-n-hand announcement that IBM is going to be purchased by Microsoft in a deal estimated @ $128 billion dollars. Mr. Palmisano said that he was very excited about finally getting rid of those ugly green screen system and running a GUI on those ugly iSeries AS/400 systems. More info to come...........

The Ballad of Clayon Homes - (Warning: Not Technical)
I picked up my copy of FastCompany from the mail drop today as I have been out of town for two weeks at our customer in Washington, DC. I came across this article in it. It is a very interesting read. My wife and I were invited to a private Christmas Party at Jim & Kay Clayton's house back before Christmas. There were about 30 people there and we were treated to Jim's guitar playing about 9:00 pm that evening.

My buddy is back in the fold
A friend of mine has just recently lost his job at an online training company. He is the best developer, programmer, and architect I have ever seen (he also runs a little at the mouth, but I do to). His name is Michael D. Long. He is a Microsoft MVP. He wrote some articles about Windows DNA a couple of years ago. He is going to be doing some work for my company. I am excited to be working with Mike again after several years. If you can get by the rough edges, he is a great programmer!!!!!!!!!!!

Helping the local community
I recently have gotten involved with a local small business organization. I have written an application that allows them to post information to a database about their business. That part of the application is protected by a userid and password. Another part of the application allows anyone to search the information in the database for a company with certain parameters. I have written this at no cost to the local chamber of commerce (Knoxville Chamber Partnership) or to those in the small business organization. I have written this with the hope of helping my community. Obviously, it is a .NET application. It is not pretty, because I am not a pretty pictures, flaming logos, twirling and spinning kind of guy. The artsy fartsy stuff is for the graphic designers.

I have no idea what is really going on with regards to blogs and Microsoft, but I just want everyone to know that I hope we don't lose any bloggers from Microsoft. There is an article at Microsoft-Watch.com.

What happened this week?
I ate lunch on Monday with three of my good friends. They are excellent, high quality developers. Not only would I trust them with my life, I would trust that what they said about code was 100% true. Two of them said that when their company is sold this summer that they will most likely be out of work. On Tuesday, thanks to my sickness(es) over the last several months, we lost additional work from a customer. I also got an email saying that another customer said that they decided to shelve a project I was working on for them. On Wednesday, I got a call from a friend of mine that he lost his job just and hour or two before. What happened that I missed in the news? Is this "Get rid of good developers week?" Or maybe I am finally seeing the signs that the work situation is pretty bad right now all over?
