  • Message Queuing and the Real World

I'm putting together three new sessions for VSLive! in San Francisco. One of these is a session that introduces messaging as an alternative to a more linear approach to network application design. I've implemented MSMQ on a few different applications. One was an accounts payable front end application to an accounting package, and the company that I did it for marveled in the fact that even through their accounting package was down, the accounts payable clerks were still able to work away as if nothing was wrong.

  • Closing the Cover

So here's the deal. I have this Dell Latitude D600 laptop and I've recently installed Windows Server 2003 with the expectation of leaving this on 24x7 with the cover closed (anyone experienced with this is welcome to chime in on that concept).

  • Team Foundation Server / Team Explorer Question

One of the things I can't figure out how to do is to create a folder in the root of a Team Foundation Server in the Team Explorer in VS 2005. I work for many clients, and each client has several projects. I should be able to create folders in the root of the team server (i.e. "Client 1", "Client 2", etc.) and THEN be able to create my Team Projects within those folders.

  • ThinkPad Follow-up

Kudos must go out to someone who commented on my last blog entry about my new ThinkPad T43P - "ozczecho". Once I reformatted and did a fresh install it was like night and day, and my ThinkPad now sprints instead of jogs. It really forces me to stop and wonder if manufacturers are aware of the degredation in performance that their 3rd party software packages are often responsible for.

  • ThinkPad T43P - First Impressions

I recently obtained an IBM ThinkPad T43P and I have several thoughts. It is important to keep in mind that I am comparing this new machine to a Dell Latitude D600 laptop which I have had for about a year.

  • Unbelievable

I saw the following news story and was forced to wonder just how rediculous this concept is. Seriously - shouldn't the DVDs also carry warnings about smoking pot, snorting coke, shooting up, smoking crack, hitting people, killing people, driving safely, cursing too much, eating poorly, and about a hundred other things that could be considered a negative impact on health? Sometimes it's just so obvious how people miss the bigger picture.

  • "Pin" a Folder to the Start Menu

I'm sure this is a simple thing and I'm just overcomplicating it, but can anyone tell me how I can pin a folder on the network to my Windows Start Menu so that when I hover over it I can see (and then click) on the contents of that folder?

  • Dell PowerEdge 600SC - Quiet?

I was wondering if anyone knew of a power supply I could get for my Dell PowerEdge 600SC that would be quieter than the one that shipped with the server without sacrificing wattage. I only have 2 hard drives, 2 DVD drives, and one floppy drive, but I'm certain there HAS to be a more audible-friendly power supply out there that I can depend on for my one and only server.

  • iTunes vs MSN Music - I Choose Freedom

I have spent a great deal of time contemplating and comparing the benefits and drawbacks of the iTunes and MSN Music online services. Each let you buy a song or entire CD and play it back on a specific few devices.

  • West Wing Season Premier

I am now 11 minutes in to the West Wing season premier and I have to say that I am already disappointed. The powers that be had the opportunity to bring back some of the magic during the Aaron Sorkin years but obviously they were either ignorant or arrogant and now the show will be lucky to get another season after this one (if another is even in the pipeline).
