The end of Wrox Press?
While doing my daily check for Blog updates I was shocked and dismayed to read Andrew Krowczk's post about Wrox Press notifying authors to stop work on any contracted work.
If this is truly the end of Wrox Press, it will be a hard pill to swallow for many developers who have dedicated entire bookshelves(sometimes several) to those "big red books with pictures of geeks".
Some could blame it on the fact that MS Press finally got their act together with the release of .NET, but frankly I think it has more to do with the quantity over quality decisions made by the Wrox Press editors. For example, I am using that huge "Prefessional C#" tome to prop open my door, since it's painfully slow to read as a tutorial, and much too large for a reference book.
Bottom line...there is way too much FREE information available over the internet (esp MSDN) and books have grown way too expensive, even with discounts at Amazon or BookPool.
The good news is that my favorite local discount bookstore, 75% Off Books, will likely have a flood of big red books soon. At $4.99/book, I will probably increase my Wrox book collection from just 1 to 5 or more books.
