Musings on Microsoft Technologies and other technical things

  • New job

I am close to finishing my first week at a new place.  I've hired in full-time to take on a team management role which includes classic ASP as well as ASP.NET (2003, 2005 & 2008).  From what I understand so far we need to finish stabilizing the classic ASP app while we roll the app into a .NET application.  The app was acquired when the company I work for bought a local company and brought them "into the fold".  :)

  • Wii + Virtual Reality...

This is a really slick trick to add a new dimension to gaming - and other applications!

Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space. By Johnny Chung Lee, Carnegie Mellon University. • Testing Live Writer

I wanted to test out how easy it might be to add photos, like this Christmas house.

Looks like I can add maps too.  Our house is pretty much dead center - and it looks like a satellite image from 18 months ago.

  • Skiing and life...

I *used* to be an avid skiier.  I *was* a PSIA/PNSIA certified ski instructor and an avid downhill racer.  I started in Alaska and continued in the Seattle area. I now live in the Denver area and for the last 8-1/2 years I have been skiing twice.  You would have to be extremely dense to not have heard of the great resorts all just a few hours drive from where I live.  Aspen, Breckenridge, Snowmass, Vail, Steamboat and the list goes on.  As avid a skier as I thought I was I was actually surprised at the number of slopes here in Colorado alone!  My wife, through her work, has access to some free ski passes so we are already planning on heading up to the slopes this year.  We did not really want to start right off in the high traffic resorts and were having some challenges finding some of the less known places.

  • Cell Phone - Samsung i760

I am on Verizon and because of some family situations will not be leaving Verizon.  So, I am on a quest to find the right phone for me!

  • Handling Outlook Mail in VBA for Outlook

I am on way too many email lists. Between my IT career, space related sites, science R&D, Marine Corps, SCA, skydiving or what have you. I got tired of making rules for each list and finally decided to use programming to skin this cat. It took some time looking up all the Outlook objects but this is what I finally came up with in VBA Most of this could convert to .NET pretty easily if the need was there.
