[OT] Haze Grey...

...and underway.

I spent last week on my brother's ship, the USS Higgins (DDG 76). They were returning from a 6 month deployment and were allowed to take family members with them for the final leg of the trip from Honolulu to San Diego.

I kicked the submarine lieutenant habit back in '97 and had been missing the diesel / deep fat fryer / floor wax / sweaty socks smell, as well as the big night skies you can can only see a thousand miles from land. It was cool to see my little brother as the navigator of a big ol' ship, and to watch him and his friends make a tough job look easy. These kids have even figured out how to make a ship go without splitting atoms. Amazing.
