Do you ever code what you planned to code that day?

Is it just me or does anyone else come in with a plan "I will code this today" and by day's end, you have not even touched it; rather you spent the entire day doing research or learning something new?

For example, today I planned to develop our exception handling component.  I started chatting with Wes on TCP or HTTP for .net remoting, which led to a couple of hours of research on the topic and now I am doing some proof of concepts!   Is this .net stuff just too cool or what!  Everyday there is something new to learn....challenges, challenges, and then more challenges.  Life is good!

  • It happens to me quite a bit. I aways seem to get off on a tangent, learning new things.

  • I usually get disturbed from our other staffers who want to know more about .NET. Coding muchless research goes down the tubes.

  • Like most developers I can easily stand accused of doing a bit too much "creative dreaming" :-)

What I've started to do lately is, when I write out my daily 'TO DO' list, I put little $ signs next to the tasks that I can bill to the client.

When I do a task, I transfer it across to another column titled 'TASKS COMPLETE' and, again, I place a little $ icon next to the tasks for which I can bill.

At the end of the day you get a very revealling glimpse of how you spend your day :-)

  • It is very easy to get sidetracked with .Net. There is so much to learn and not enough time to learn it.

Can I be given an IV full of .Net so I can absorb it in my sleep?

I need to organize the things I find along the way so that I can go gack to them when I have time.
