Jeff's looking for the web services dial tone

Web Services are failing and I know why.

I read on and I understand where he's going, but I think he's just a little impatient. He's looking for a consumer side killer app. Looking back at the past few years, how fast is the adoption of XML happening? Depending on who you ask, XML is either completely adopted or some others believe that XML has just now hit mainstream.

In consumer terms, I think we were just seeing the first real XML killer apps in 2003. The first one is unarguable RSS. This little syndication format is everywhere. It's gone way beyond personal blogs, even large content publishers like CNN.com now have RSS feeds of their head lines. RSS has finally brought XML to the likes of my in-laws and my mother ... Office 2003 may have brought XML to the business desktop, RSS brought
XML to the masses.

Now let's took at the timetable ... the first time I was part of a team that used XML was six years ago 1998 -- still very early in the life of XML. It took six years for XML to make it to mainstream applications. In web services terms, we're in the same state of adoption as we were six years ago with XML. It's ready for the geeks, but the masses will take their time to catch up.

Be patient Jeff ... ;)
