Upcoming Talk At Austin SQL Server User Group

I'll be speaking at CACTUSS on 10/19/04 at 5:30pm at the Microsoft Technology Center in Austin. The talk examines using XML with SQL Server 2000, SQLXML 3.0 and, if time permits, SQL Server 2005.

Here are some details on the talk:

XML capabilities are becoming a core requirement for many of today's business applications. While XML has been the preferred technology for exchanging data, XML is now also becoming the technology of choice for system integration, loosely-coupled systems and service-oriented architectures. This talk examines the XML capabilities of SQL Server 2000 and the SQLXML 3.0 Web release in greater detail. SQL Server 2000 with SQLXML offers XML based CRUD functionality and exposing data in XML format to traditional clients, over an HTTP interface or through SOAP Web services.

The talk also briefly introduces the XML features in the upcoming release of SQL Server 2005 and demonstrates how the various XML options enable:

  • integration of SQL Server databases with applications from the Microsoft Office 2003 suite (like Excel),
  • displaying SQL Server data through SharePoint Services 2003 Team Sites
  • exposing Web services to participate in SOA environments with BizTalk Server 2004 to execute business processes.

Hope to see you there.
